The spread of the Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) has changed our way of life in many ways. With mandatory social distancing nearly worldwide and estimated 52% of the world on government mandated lockdown, the dynamics of our lives as we knew them will forever be changed. To address the current circumstances, many companies and schools have shifted to virtual workplace and classroom environments respectively, and many of our daily activities have similarly moved to more internet-friendly settings.

Innovations Become Part of Our Lives

One of the most palpable changes in our lives has been the importance of technologies that weren’t so necessary only a few weeks ago. During the week of March 19, Microsoft Teams alone saw a 37% increase in its active daily users, with over 10 new companies signed up, adding over a million users. Microsoft also reported a 220% increase in skype-to-skype calls over the same period. With an estimated 67% of the work-from-home workforce in the United States, the use of social applications or chat applications to communicate has proven pivotal to the success of many business. Many of the companies employing these workers have shown interest in maintaining at least a portion of their workforce in work-from-home positions after lockdown and social distancing orders are lifted. In addition to workplace changes, the nature of everyday activities such as grocery shopping, postal services, and governmental processes have recorded dramatic increases in interactions with their online counterparts. Many people are using these systems for the first time and, with their newfound knowledge of them, will continue to do so and will further integrate these solutions into their lives permanently.

Coronavirus and Its Aftermath

It is now widely accepted that even after the coronavirus has been properly contained, it will continue to exist among the human race and its impact will be felt for generations to come. Social behavior will likely be irreversibly modified by the stigma surrounding the novel viral disease, causing more people to consider things like social distancing and work from home as a staple in preventing a similar situation in the future. The lessons learned in businesses, healthcare, and personal life as a result of this pandemic will not fade away as the number of infected diminishes, rather they will be pervasive in every aspect of our day to day lives. This could result in the eradication of certain ways of doing things that were considered standard only a few short months ago, and inevitably breathe life into new methods, processes, and inventions that will replace their respective predecessors.
